What is Vite?
Vite is a build tool that aims to provide a faster, learning development experience for modern web projects. It offers a no-bundle solution, which means that we do not need any extra bundling step during the development of our Vue application.
Let's compare it to Vue-CLI to understand how this works.
What is the difference between Vite and Vue-CLI?
Vue-CLI is a tool for quickly setting up a Vue-based project, including project scaffolding, a dev server with hot-module reloading, and a plugin system. Vue-CLI is built on top of Webpack, so the dev server, and the build functionality and performance will be a superset of Webpack.
Vite is also a build tool with basic project scaffolding and a dev server, but instead of using Webpack, it bases its operation on native ES modules. This provides rich feature enhancements, like an extremely fast Hot Module Replacement (HMR).
How does Vite work in production?
So far, we have talked about the benefits of Vite during development, but what about production? How can we do without Webpack? Well, Vite provides a build command that bundles your code with Rollup, pre-configured to output highly optimized static assets in production.
Let's look at some extra benefits of Vite
Vite means fast in French, and there is no doubt that speed is its main attraction. But it also includes interesting features:
It supports importing TypeScript files out of the box.
It was created to work with Vue 3, but it also supports Vue 2 and even other frameworks like React.
So yes, .jsx and .tsx files are also supported out of the box. JSX transpilation is also handled via ESBuild, and defaults to the React 16 flavor.
It supports CSS, PostCSS, and CSS Modules and CSS Pre-processors.
It works with Static Assets, JSON, Glob Import, Web Assembly, Web Workers, Build Optimizations, and the list continues!
Try it for yourself and let me know how it helped you.
